Lincoln, to me, was one of the most worthy leaders to ever respect the importance of the US Constitution. To start from humble beginnings and to have the need to experience first hand, the challenges of fending for oneself should be required experience for anyone chosen to lead those self same people.
The quote, to me, illustrates the importance of intentionality of effort to achieve a specific, considered, objective. Integrity, inasmuch as it is a foundational characteristic, is not a quality that just is, like selfishness. It is one of humanity’s finest qualities and requires focus and active effort to display it. Ambition to reach heights like being a decent human being, to me, is a worthy mental driver.
Where are the Lincoln’s of our generation who seems to have been a man who would put integrity above self service? I would love to hear his speech on the current state of a party he represented with such humanity. He did not take the sacrifices made to defend the true spirit of the US Constitution lightly. He carried the deaths of those who made the ultimate sacrifice heavily…and for what, to be replaced by a person who believes that all men are not created equal. Some deserve to be rich and the rest don’t. Lincoln set a very high bar that may never be reached again unless someone special has the ambition to prioritise integrity. Politics be damned.

My thought is that Integrity has to include love and respect for others as well as for the self.
And there is a saying that truth without love is just brutality.
