Two book recommendations:
1)Moonwalking with Einstein. this book was written by a journalist who won the National Memory Contest as part of his research. This book gives helpful tips on how to improve your memory, but it is also a charming, quirky, and insightful. The author seems like an authentic, likable guy. It is full of neat little tidbits from History, too.
2) How to train a wild elephant, and other adventures in mindfulness. This is the book I am reading now. When an elephant is brought out of the Jungle, they are tethered to a stake during their training. In the time of Buddha, elephants were used to go to battle. They were trained not to flee from war and chaos. The mind is like the elephant that has to be trained. When the human mind senses danger, real or imagined, it is conditioned to flee or fight, or maybe fantasize, or have anxiety, rather than remaining calm and centered. We can train our mind, like the elephants were trained to remain in the present moment without dividing our time lamenting about the past or imagining a million possible futures.
I encourage anyone who is struggling to read the second book. it is an easy read, and the mindfulness exercises can be completed week to week. You can have peace of mind. #givegirlsbooksforChristmas

In a Sunburned Country by Bill Bryson.
Bill is an author that shares some of his adventures. He’s smart and funny. This one was about exploring Austrailia and with is observational skills he paints the kinds of pictures that are almost as good as being there.
I like the kinds of books that provide an experience of being exposed to how others think about real things. I love biographies that show how people arrived where they ended up.
I used to read a lot of self-help books, but I think for the most part I’m done with those. Get three psychologists in a room and you’ll get six opinions. I’m usually more confused after reading them, than I was before I started.
@spitfire3dc I read a book by Bryson. Cant recall the name of it, but I think it was about him hiking lotsa miles, and nature, and so forth. it did not engage me as much as some books he read, but I know they made a movie about it. I know he is a good writer.
I take a lot away from self help books. I do not have the problem of feeling confused. I take more away from some than others. Many of the ones I read now essentially agree with all the new neuroscience that is out.
