Did you know there are over 200,000 rape kits untested in the US?

OK, I am going back in time. When I was attacked as a 16 year old, beaten to a pulp where every bone in my face was broken, and left for dead; there was sperm and blood all over my clothes. I was told by the police they sent my clothes to Washington DC since that was the only place where they conducted these types of tests at the time. DNA wasn’t even a term yet, so I am not sure what they were doing, but it would help identify the attacker. I knew who the attacker was because I saw his face as I was fighting him off before he choked me into unconsciousness, but I was the victim, not considered a witness.

Nothing ever came of it. They said the evidence was lost. Fast forward 42 years later, and I see this trailer for a documentary about rape kits across our country that have piled up, never tested. God damn it.

What doesn’t kill me makes me stronger. I am so fucking strong.

Thank goodness this disgusting crime by our police force has been brought to light. I must see this documentary. How about you?

    The problem is the current culture of the #MeToo movement and fake rape scenarios. Crime labs are inundated with rape kits, and if it was a first in first out queue, there would be a lot of frivolous rape kits that the crime lab spends time on that other more real and important cases would be pushed back where time is of the essence.

    When there is a legitimate rape, or a minor, or a _real_ case that comes through, it is given precedent over the many lesser important rape kits. What this translates to is 200,000 rape kits on the back burner where real work is done. This isn’t ALL rape kits, the REAL rape kits are treated with priority ahead of the queue of “I was drunk, don’t know what happened” type rape kits.

    This is a current divisive topic in the forensics departments across the United States, I have a friend that is in charge of the a lab, and who flies around the country training labs and certifying them. I had a lengthy discussion about this exact topic with them about a year ago.

    It’s not as cut and dry as you’re making it out to be, and at this time, is a completely loaded and stupid agenda.

      @Weenis “fake rape”, I knew someone like you would use that term. IF these tests were completed they could determine who did the crime, and if it was “fake” or not. Women don’t run around and steal sperm to complete a fake rape kit. Tell your “friend” to work harder. Jesus Christ you are gross.

        @Gina

        They don’t have time to complete them, and they keep increasing in quantity. They’re from stupid crap like, “I don’t know what happened, I remember drinking a bottle of jack, and then waking up.”

        A lot of times the rape kit doesn’t even test positive for semen.

        So if there’s 10 employees, and there’s 13 employees worth of work, but there’s X number of fake rape kits to test, and 10 employees worth of _real_ honest to God crime lab work… which should take precedent?

        Just think about it, it’s a simple problem

        Edit to add-

        Also, it’s not a made up term, and I’m not being cold about it, it’s actually a thing.

        There’s all kinds of sources. There’s FBI numbers, the whole deal. Also, all numbers show the fake rape scenarios are on the rise.

        @Weenis I meant, if these tests were actually looked at; not just thrown in a warehouse and forgotten. What are you afraid of? One of these tests might point a finger at you? The fact that you would even consider this a divisive topic makes me want to puke.

        @Gina

        Are you seriously disgusting and vile enough to accuse me of being a rapist?

        I’m saying, as I stated above, that according to the actual crime lab workers and leaders, they have too much work, and they have to place something at the back of the queue.

        How is that so hard to understand? How am I being divisive at all? I’m telling you what actual crime lab workers have personally told me.

    WHAT IS A RAPE KIT?

    DNA evidence from a crime like sexual assault can be collected from the crime scene, but it can also be collected from your body, clothes, and other personal belongings. You may choose to have a sexual assault forensic exam, sometimes known as a “rape kit,” to preserve possible DNA evidence and receive important medical care. You don’t have to report the crime to have an exam, but the process gives you the chance to safely store evidence should you decide to report at a later time.

    To find a location near you that performs sexual assault forensic exams, call the National Sexual Assault Hotline at 800.656.HOPE (4673) or talk to your local sexual assault service provider.

    You may have heard the term “rape kit” to refer to a sexual assault forensic exam. The term rape kit actually refers to the kit itself—a container that includes a checklist, materials, and instructions, along with envelopes and containers to package any specimens collected during the exam. A rape kit may also be referred to as a Sexual Assault Evidence Kit (SAEK). The contents of the kit vary by state and jurisdiction and may include:

    Bags and paper sheets for evidence collection
    Comb
    Documentation forms
    Envelopes
    Instructions
    Materials for blood samples
    Swabs

    Another example of mixed up priorities.

    You inspire me. To be tested so severely and to come up with a positive mental attitude is nothing short of awesome. RESPECT!
