If there was an all-powerful being that created everything, no, we don’t need pain. In the world that we were given though, pain helps us to stay alive. It keeps us from being reckless and keeps others from ending their life when they are done with it all. If I could get something done to where I don’t feel pain anymore, I’d be all for that. I can’t stand it, even the small, everyday stuff. I can understand the reasoning that pain helps you appreciate pleasure, but I just don’t agree with it, in a sense. I mean, should we view murders as something that helps us appreciate laws and those that follow them? Should we view the hell happening in less civilized countries just as something that can help us appreciate our freedoms and education? Can they help us appreciate these things? Sure, but I refuse to be ok with these crappy things just so we can feel better about ourselves or better at certain points/moments in life. I mean, one person’s “painful learning experience” could be another’s literal Hell on Earth. We take things differently. Some may learn something from it, some may not have needed a lesson but was put into that position anyway.
@yin Remember the old “Darkman” series? Guy got burned off (basically) all his skin in an accident/ deliberate thing (they thought he was dead, he wasn’t). He developed a skin that had a fatal flaw: it would only last 99 minutes. Because there were no nerves in his skin when he was in disguise, he lit a cigar and was burning his own hand, and didn’t realize it because there were no nerves there.
@Jear77 I actually haven’t heard of that. I’d be totally down with not feeling when I was burned. Like, I have a sense of smell. If I smell burning, I can check. I’d rather die and never feel it than to live in pain. Well, I think “live in pain” is a bit biased sounding or whatever since I think many people would feel that way. I guess more of “be in a situation where I’d be in that much pain and live from it.” Reading about Darkman, he seems like a more hero version of DC’s Hush villain.
I don’t know if we need pain, but I believe it’s an inevitable part of life. If anything, I think we need to learn how to cope with pain in healthy ways.
Tony Robbins needs alotta pain.
@luftballooneyegouge Why him? (name sounds familiar… a sports star on a commercial for a pain relief product maybe?)
@Jear77
HA!
on a physical level, pain lets us know what is going on with our bodies. i feel pain in my back i know i need to take care of that. for example…
heart pain Could spur us in similar ways, if we let it. as a push for change to heal?
@BelleMadre are you meaning “heart” as in the physical organ in the body… or heart pain as in emotional pain?
@Jear77 in this example i mean heart ache, emotional pain
