I suggest that work is independent of whether or not you are employed! I punch a clock, but work? I’m not sure. someone said , “love what you do and you’ll never work a day in your life”. I am currently trying to impart this message into my children as they decide on college majors that may set them on a path the rest of their lives.
yesterday at “work”, me and my clients listened to soul train, we danced, we hugged our own inner children. I was asked if I own a pair of roller skates, and I said, “why, yes, I do! I do own roller skates!” I was promptly informed that one of my clients used to teach roller skating lessons, and could teach me how to waltz on skates.
I work at a hud property that serves aged and disabled.
I also want to submit that you can have a happy childhood in middle age and beyond!

I just watched The Jerk the other day.
I quit my official paper route & am back to being a free-wheeling paperboy substitute.
I’m not productive enough to be called an artist.
I prefer the term ‘Fake Artist’.
If I loved what I did for work, I wouldn’t own a house. It’s that simple. I admire people who can find a career that pays well and they love it. I don’t despise what I do, but I can’t say I love it. I love the company I work for and most of the people I work with. The work itself…I rather be cooking or gardening. I had a manager who is a musician, but can’t make loads of money at it. He said, “I make enough money so I can do what I love in my spare time.” My job gives me 5 weeks vacation, plus all the holidays, and pays me well, so I get to do another thing I love which is to travel the world.
Is Ben Carson your boss? If so, do you see any major changes yet? I admire the work you do. I hope this administration doesn’t pull the rug out from people.
@Gina I have a belief that we all have a place of creative flow. I have a belief that if we set our minds to it, we can find that place, and nothing will feel like work. I am in that place except for during my down time at work.
Carson hasn’t affected me all that much so far, however I know they want to make cuts to HUd. They also want to cut out the service coordinators who serve native americans
@Scarlett I work with computers most of the day, but I also empower people to use their computer’s software to their full potential. Helping people gives me joy, so my work isn’t completely awful. My work place gives me the opportunity to do the things I really enjoy like working in the environmental community, putting together team building activities for our leadership meetings. I agree, we need to set our minds to finding that place where we can tap into our creativity.
I hope Carson doesn’t get to do the horrid things they plan on doing.

I am retired and I don’t do as much as I ought to around here.
When I was employed, I owned my own house cleaning service and Professional Uniformed Maid Service. I could never be stuck in an office. I picked out my pick of the customer’s houses and cleaned a house, or two, everyday. I enjoyed my work. If there was a problem customer that my other housekeepers said, “She is a bitch!!!” or “Nothing I do pleases her!!”, I would go and clean that house and get to know what that customer wanted. I am good at problem solving and handling cranky people. I have a knack for doing things the way other people want them done. Each household wanted things cleaned and put away differently. Some don’t want their clutter put away and bitch when they can’t find things. I enjoyed my work so much that it was not work at all. With a cell phone, I could handle all the calls while I worked.
I miss those days, but I love being retired. Nowadays, I am casual about cleaning our own house. I know that there are things placed in our house that belonged to Immortal Pirate’s deceased wife and they are NOT to be moved. She has been gone for 6 and a half years, but you never know. She might come back and need her old purse, and underwear, and such. From the many years that I cleaned other people’s houses and did things their way, it was easy to fit in this house and do things Immortal Pirate’s way. I eventually skooch things to my way.
@ladybarbara How do you feel about the things not being able to be moved? Unresolved grief? Do you feel like you are competing for space?
@Scarlett In my California house, I slept with a stuffed bunny that Immortal Pirate bought me. I had my stuffed bunnies and stuffed skunks all around me to throw on my bed with the pillows. I could enjoy them and have memories of when I got them. Now, I have my stuffed animals tucked away under things and stuffed in dark corners. The room is full of stuffed animals, knick-knacks, and jewelry boxes that belonged to his dead wife. I lay in bed and wonder what wonderful memory goes with her tigers and penguins? Her things get displayed and mine get hidden. Sometimes, I want to enjoy my stuffed animals and I pull one out to celebrate it when he is away from the house. How do I feel??? I feel like my things don’t count. I lay in bed and realize I own half of the house, but there is no room for my things. I feel like I am an afterthought. 2nd class.
Every once in a while, I get fed up. Her underwear is in a basket in a corner of our bedroom, because I made him take it off of the shelves in the closet. I guess he is saving it so that I can clean windows with it ——- yuck!!! I have special fiber cloths to wash glass with. When washing windows, how many times have you wanted to use another woman’s underpants to do the job??? I am guessing NEVER. I did point out that I have no place to store my 127 pairs of Birkenstocks because his dead wife’s shoes were on all the good closet shelves. I got to put her shoes in a bag of clothes to be donated and I now store my shoes on the good shelves. This week, I talked to him about going through the office files that she had. She was a Nurse. Neither Immortal, nor I are Nurses. We need to clean out the file drawers and put our own files in those drawers. Then, I can take my files and paperwork out of my bathroom. My bathroom is cluttered with things that I have no place to store. It is time to take what was hers and his and make it his and mine. But, I cannot do it all at once. It takes time to ease him into that idea. At least her purse is out of the dining room, but I think he put it on the desk in the media room. Oh well, one step at a time.
@ladybarbara It will happen…old useless things will disappear and there will be room for the new things you have brought into the house. This is after all, OUR HOUSE now.

@ladybarbara I think you should set a boundary with immortal pirate, and maybe you two can have some sort of compromise. I think you should give him a certain amount of time as to when you will need to bring your things out. You matter! You are 100 percent worthy of being loved as much as a memory. his wife matters, too, but so do you. there ought be a way to honor her memory while honoring your presence.

I work when I am not being paid. and I work pretty damn hard. This weekend will be no exception as I have Sunday organised with stuff to physically do that starts at 8am with a hope to sit down to dinner around 7 with a sense that I have accomplished what I set out to do.
When I am being paid, i am just being who I am and focus on being occupied. Everything rolls from there. Mind you I do mix in work associated with installations of things we make. Sometimes that can be taxing. a few years ago I was physically involved in getting heavy steel up about three stories with block and tackle and I can tell ya, I slept well that night.
@spitfire3dc a good days work does certainly lead to a feeling of accomplishment.
