Any thoughts on this seemingly inevitable progression in our culture over the past 50 years?
*******************
For some background, we started as a Honor Culture (pistols at dawn for any perceived slight diminishing you in the public eye).
Then progressed into a Dignity Culture, where the strength of the individual entreated a growing of a “thick skin” where even things that hurt were shrugged off/healed from.
But then we ceased the upward climb and started sliding downwards as I’ve outlined above. (Again, for a variety of social reasons — real and imagined — that I could to into in considerable detail for anyone wishing it.)

I disagree. We did begin with a “pull yourself up by your boot straps mentality”, but the problem was the white male stepped on the backs of women and people of color on their way up. For centuries society and specific sects of society, especially religions have been oppressive to a great many people. Now some are starting to grow conscious and realize that maybe it wasn’t right to oppress all those people for all those years, and to continue to oppress them. They and the oppressed people are beginning to find their voice. Some in society think this is a bad thing and want things to go back how they were. “Be quiet and don’t talk about your trauma.” This isn’t right. One must acknowledge and name their trauma, all of their trauma, before they can move on from it. We must mourn the paths that were cut off in order to make a new path. Furthermore, a safe culture sounds pretty damn good to me, but we are far from it.
@Scarlett
We need to start with the realization that the social sciences have become infected with a pair of very sociopathic ideologies.
@griz how is that? Does society not have a history of grieving its losses? Before moving on from them?
@Scarlett
Ideological infection is not a good way to grieve.
Playing the victimhood mindset as one’s core identity does serious psychological and behavioral harm.
The only escape would be the utter dissolution of one’s core identity and the rebuilding of another from the ground up.
Few adults can psychologically survive this. Some can’t physically survive it.
Especially if one has groomed themselves by years of actively hunting for reasons (both real and imagined ) to maintain it.
One never has to heal and move on.
Because if you heal and move on you can no longer claim ongoing “rights of the oppressed”! That is why all of the postmodern Neo Marxism victimhood groups can never move on.
They lose their only Power base if they do.
And they never get on with learning the power of the individual to shape and affect their own life regardless of outside agency.
Nietzsche predicted that they would either flee into nihilism or crave totalitarianism as protection.
The worst thing about these victimhood identity groups, is that they generate perpetuel victims as their ideologue pawns.
Have you not wondered at the process by which people are learning to become offended by ever smaller and smaller trespasses, actual and perceived??
Oh, and the second worst thing about postmodern Neo Marxism is that it seeks to undo the sanctity of the individual upon which the free West is based.
@Scarlett
We need to start with the realization that the social sciences in particular have become infected with a pair of very sociopathic ideologies from the very recent past, trying to re-engineer themselves through our society.
This isn’t opinion or belief. I think you know I’m a man that does not assert things off-the-cuff without doing the proper study. If I’m not sure I will say I’m not sure or leave it as a question or supposition.
I spent over a year now doing in-depth study and meditation on this, and subjected it to the proper epistemology of multi-discipline multi-trait/variable disconfirmation. (I wasn’t seeking to prove it but rather to disprove it by multiple means. I could not. The ideologies you are parroting the talking points of almost never uses this method, because it would cut themselves off the knees. They favor single incident univariate analysis. Ie, the man who was cop-shot was black therefore racism was the motivation. The trans-person didn’t get the job therefore transphobia was the motivation)
The oppression narratives and victimhood intersectionality political power groups are postmodern Neo Marxism — an Unholy coupling if there ever was one.
They have proven they are both capable and will quite gleefully pursue biased models of the past, and commission devious polls and bad scientific studies aimed at arriving at a destination favorable to their agenda, rather than revealing truth. (The opposite of multi-discipline multi-trait disconfirmation)
Here are some of the tricks they use:
1. In the power- game of the saintly oppressed versus the evil oppressor, all is fair. That which is becried as evil in the hands of the other, is saintly and Sanctified in their hands (ie, blacks patently cannot be racist). Power is what causes oppression by their estimation, and if you are oppressed (In thought or reality), you need to grab Power by any and all means.
But then they haven’t really thought this through. Because when they have the power how can they avoid not becoming the evil oppressors? Purely by the saintly merit of having been oppressed themselves?
All of the murderous professions of Marxism rest on this premise.
2. Evil race evil gender bias.
If something you mark as opposed to you can be classified as evil, you therefore must be good!
Never mind that you have to bias history and current reality to come to this conclusion. Feminism in particular is very bad at biasing the past; the evil is accentuated and becomes totally divorced from all of the abundant good that came from society as it has been ordered for the past 150 to 250 million years. Plus it actively discounts women’s role in shaping our very species.
Let’s remember that while men engineered the social infrastructure women engineered the genome that would populate it.
Also, there were probably just as many women who either owned or benefited from slaves as men. But now suddenly the men are all to blame and the women are blameless? There’s a lot of bias in that self-blinding assertion. Oh, and let’s remember that the Christian religion had a lot to do with dismantling slavery. And it was decidedly patriarchal.
The thing is there are valid issues to be addressed. But we most emphatically do NOT want to address them through a toxic victimhood (slave) mindset that has ravaged every society it has taken hold in.
Freethinkers don’t need such toxic ideologies to maintain the delusion of “the righteous oppressed” as justification for trying to warp both the past and the present just to maintain the group power base by which they can control (oppress) any individual they come across.
This response is a second draft. The first confronted each point of fallacy-of-the-ideology you presented with far more adept use of logic reason history sociology and behavioral psychology than the postmodern Neo Marxist have ever brought to bear on their constructs.
I think you know that I respect you. But I have no respect for the ideologies who’s talking points you were using in your response. I understand where you are getting them from. But they are only partially true at best: and at worst outright manipulations unto gaining and maintaining power.
I would encourage you as an intelligent woman to do your own epistemology on them and make sure they represent the fullest possible truth of reality (past and present) and not just agenda.
@griz
You’re the one that can’t move on.
The progress made by the formerly oppressed proves they’re on the correct path.
Being openly gay in the 1980s meant risking one’s life in much of ‘merica.
People rich in melanin used to be looked at as work animals.
…..the history is pretty much endless.
Your simplistic hyperbole paints with a brush too big to fit into a 50 gallon barrel.
So what if hundreds of years ago women owned slaves too.
Your scorekeeping doesn’t do anything for girls being raped in a culture where powerful men could get away with it. Their movement Does.
@luftballooneyegouge
The forward progress is not the issue.
The ideology that the victimhood outrage groups are using, is.
@griz
The ideology you see is tunnel-vision magnified through hyperbole that blinds you from the whole picture.
The hyperbole comes from Your ideology.
Your ideology cannot accept the progress and maintain validity, so it’s compartmentalized.
……tunnel-vision
@luftballooneyegouge
The Quest For Truth is more anti-ideology.
I could take you on an exhaustive historical walk through the progression Marxism, how a group of French intellectuals morphed it into post-modernism when it became evident what a reprehensible thing it was, and the Double Down tactic of postmodern Neo Marxism ( two parts of the whole coming back together again) when enough time had passed for people who are not well read in history do not recognize it, if you wish it
@griz
Your tunnel-vision compartmentalization cloaked in the pompous bullshit label of “The Quest For Truth” is dripping in ideological zealotry.
@luftballooneyegouge
Science is a quest for truth. Objective material truth. And it can be found drifting into ideological zealotry, and in purer forms.
One becomes an ideological zealot (an ideologue) when their sacrifices start including things like critical analysis rational thought and intelligent discussion for the sake of protecting their ideology.
This happens regardless of whether it is spiritual religious materialistic victimhood or nihilist.
The Quest for the truth — and for the highest possible Truth — is the only vaccine against it.
I don’t think the Dignity Culture existed in any actual reality of a certain period of time, any more than in the few at any given time, and most at times, here & there.
@luftballooneyegouge
Nihilism probably skipped over the dignity culture!
It was full of all kinds of toxic shit like hope and optimism, faith and trust in others. Someone’s word was their bond and a handshake was as good as a written contract. People were generally proud of and grateful for their heritage, even though recognizing they were aspects of it that were dark.
Let’s remember that it’s only been in the past 50 to 60 years that we’ve allowed Society to become defined by the people who are not proud of or grateful for it, and opted not to participate with it in a beneficial way.
@griz
Thee mythological “good ol’ days”:more binary tunnel vision from hyperbole.
My neighbor does remodeling without written contracts, and he just paid off his house.
Nationalism is at an all time high, while simultaneously celebrating more cultural exchange festivals than ever.
There’s as much hope optimism, faith & trust in others now, as ever, you just wanna look around your cozy tunnel, so you miss all the beautiful things that’re happening.

@luftballooneyegouge
I’m wondering what to make of your insisting the Dignity Culture never existed as a normative structure of society and then coming up with so many examples of it!
The remnant of a culture would seem ample proof that said culture existed, no?
So does your response fall into the category of Quest For Truth . . . Or avoidance of it?
@griz
… already covered that.
@luftballooneyegouge
Not really.
It sounded like you were saying it was akin to just a very few people in the society at any given time.
it’s more like they were very few people in the society who were NOT living according to this tenet.
I can still remember a time when only the truly paranoid locked up their bikes or their cars when going into the mall.
It was just standard to teach children that if it’s not your property keep your hands off of it.
@griz
It doesn’t sound like I said that, I SAID THAT.
Sure you wouldn’t lock up some canadian huffy piece of crap bike. My 80s Cannondale is still in the garage because of my lock. That wasn’t paranoia. It was common sense.
Radical activist Marxism was more popular in the 70s.
They still teach kids not to steal.
I don’t know when the times you’re talking about were, partly because you wouldn’t give your age when I asked, even though you’re supposed to be all about truth.
@luftballooneyegouge
While moral decay seems to be on about a 50-year time lag between our Nations, I’ve talked to older Americans from all across the union that share a similar growing up experience.
Aleksndr Solzhenitsyn’s published works in the 70s revealed just what an evil ideology Marxism revealed itself as. Those like Foucault and Derrida who were still nostalgic for it found they could not retain any respect and intellectual community unless they morphed it into post-modernism and then into Neo Marxism and sold it to a younger less historically aware generation — which then reunited to form today’s group identity victimhood outrage culture.
Nietzsche predicted that with the rationalize death of God people would flee into such ideologies, and I believe he specifically named nihilism as a variant.
If children are still being taught not to steal, why do you think we had to make it common sense to lock all our things up?
Has the teaching become ineffective, the discipline insufficient or something else?
(Maybe too many nihilists thinking nothing has any meaning!
)
I’m betting there are plenty things about yourself that you don’t offer up, and not doing so does not make you a liar!
History is there to be read; and there are still people of older Generations one can (gasp!) actually converse with.
I doubt either of them will ask you to first punch in my age!!
@griz
People are pretty open about their age at least to a decade description like you were born in the mid-60s, or late-30s.
I’ve heard your cult of Mayberry philosophy for almost 20 years now. I heard it from the republicans that cheered the invasion. I heard it from klansmen. It’s a,… sigh tunnel-vision nostalgia that every human has. The longing for how things Were,… when one was young.
The good ol’ days syndrome.
“Back in my day sonny…….”
People used to recognize certain problems sure,… and do nothing.
…but that always ends and people do something.
Sorry if it isn’t clinically perfect.
…but when you try to chicken little that black people doing pretty harmless things to raise awareness about the shooting of unarmed black people into the slippery slope to pogroms and bloodbath cultural revolutions in ‘merica,… paranoia comes to mind immediately.
Best not reveals yoeer age?
More Paranoid behavior….
Your simplistic description of nihilism could be carried in a fortune cookie,
…but I’m sure you could fill a yardstick of webpage with miles of text & only say as much.
@luftballooneyegouge
There’s no denying Marshall McLuhan’s observation that the media has a huge causative effect on society.
But the vaccine remains those who live more in reality than in the media dream-state.
Consider that the media-induced Mayberry cult of yesteryear has been thoroughly offset by a number of darker more pessimistic vision such as the nihilist/defeatist cult. The response has been reactionary in the extreme, producing the de-stabilizing pendulum swing that Western Society in particular is known for.
The pro-actionary response is to let both extremes cancel each other out and find the reality of beneficial intentional existence in the middle.
That’s why it’s good to avoid possession by the politicized ideologies: for they’ve come to thrive on extremism to produce their social warriors/battle-pawns/ disposable mouthpieces.
One needs an accurate reckoning of the past to have any direction or meaning in the present, unto charting a wise and effective course into the future.
I think you’re setting yourself up to be extremely traumatized when “your good old days “phase comes!
And come it will.
Change can be graphically represented as a four-quadrant model with engagement- withdrawal on one axis and benevolence-malevolence on the other. Nihilism does not sit in the Healthy Growth quadrant. (That doesn’t fit well in a fortune cookie!
)
I would challenge your ideological construct that “pretty harmless things” include defiant criminal activity, of victimhood mindset and resisting officers! Drop these out of the BLM martyrdom database and one is left with a remnant social issue that both sides need to address . . . Rather than the Marxist killing field of the saintly oppressed against the wicked oppressors.
It’s never good to substitute ideological possession for rational thought and critical analysis.
@griz
Here we go with the annoying “Consider” shit again.
First the REACTIONARY cult of Mayberry label I was slapping on people 15 years ago wasn’t because of media. It’s what I described.
I used Mayberry to illustrate that they were all longing for something that’s a fiction in their heads.
Like I said before, the yearning for the past is in everyone. It’s not going to jump up and traumatize me, because I already know it’s there.
The difference:
…I’m not making it my ideology.
Your compartmentalization that the cult of Mayberry is devoid of your shallow rendition of nihilism is more binary bullshit that arises from Your Ideology.
It’s almost impossible to find anything that can’t be graphically represented. The problem comes with accuracy.
Nihilism in it’s contradictory nature, is at the base of all great changes.
It’s the will to say ‘NO’, I’m not going along with the rest of you. I’m not going to continue this ridiculousness.
Your repackaged McCarthyism is drowning in loony Nietzsche goofiness that seems to be all nihilism can be, in your head.
Now you blame BLM for people resisting arrest.
Oh yeah BLM is the problem, not cops shooting unarmed people, naaaaah.
Police harassment? Nope. It’s BLM.
Dirty cops? Hey,…. BLM.
Cops being former soldiers coming back & being trained they’re fighting an insurgency? Big deal,….. BLM.
The pogroms and Maoist cultural revolutions have one main ingredient you seem to forget. They occurred in countries where mass blood-lettings by those that ruled before, set the stage for more of the same kind of thing.
Tsarist Russia & the Japanese occupation of China normalized nightmarish behavior. It’s a main ingredient, which the USA & Canada haven’t had since horse shit was the worst thing about traffic.
So just roughly, how old are you?
@luftballooneyegouge
What principle are you proposing would be of more use to society than consideration?
Again, the quest for Truth is the vaccine against ideological possession: Truth akin to what Nietzche spoke of.
I don’t just read other people’s ideas about the various possessing ideologies of the day; I actually go out and interact with them — sometimes in restaurants not of your liking! (I STILL remember your Wendy’s rant!). And things like this become an active and organic part of my assessment of various ideologies that people come to be possessed by. (Often with just barely a notion of the underlying psychological processes other than “it works for them” where they currently are [trapped]).
A good reason to “learn how to think” and not just regurgitate what others have thought, is that it honors all of the Human variant in these processes. There is no hard-and-fast concrete definitions of these ideologies — because of the Human factor. In learning how to think for oneself, one can both honor and learn from the Human factor and end up with far far more than just the often-toxic games of ideological tribalism.
There doesn’t have to be blame in the simple observation that engaging in criminal activity and/or resisting arrest singly or in combination . . . is just stupid. Especially in the cultural context of the West.
A simple stupid-test: when has resisting arrest made the situation any better? Cue Forrest Gump. “Stupid is as stupid does”. Do we REALLY have a cultural group that wants to celebrate it’s stupidity? That’s not “blame”. That’s a question, proceeding forth from an abundant observation.
You conveniently overlook that these nations where variants of Marxism took hold, were generally places where such mass blood-lettings had not previously occurred (the killing of political prisoners rose from a few dozen in 10 years of Czarist rule, to 100’s of thousands in just 3 years of Marxist rule — to eventually rack up many millions. Prison conditions likewise changed from tolerable, to inhuman After all, these were “evil oppressors” (like engineers and poets — people not buying into the indoctrinated foolishess of identity politics) and deserved no less!) . It was the variations of Marxism (saintly oppressed vs the base-evil oppressors) that sparked it. Both History and statistics indicate it was a causal relationship.
You really are smarter than this — too smart to just rely upon ideological possession to inform you.
@griz
G: “What principle are you proposing would be of more use to society than consideration?”
Answer: My peeve with your use of “Consider” is the superfluousness of starting out sentences with such nonsense. If one is reading a sentence it follows that one is already considering what’s written. One day you threw “Consider” at the beginning of every paragraph. I dogged you about it. You still do it. How you get to me saying anything about consideration relating to society, is just more weight on the scale containing bad memory & & confusion.
G: “Again, the quest for Truth is the vaccine against ideological possession: Truth akin to what Nietzche spoke of.”
Answer:You’re possessed.
Definition of ideology
plural ideologies
1 : visionary theorizing
2 a : a systematic body of concepts especially about human life or culture
b : a manner or the content of thinking characteristic of an individual, group, or culture
c : the integrated assertions, theories and aims that constitute a sociopolitical program
G: “I don’t just read other people’s ideas about the various possessing ideologies of the day; I actually go out and interact with them — sometimes in restaurants not of your liking! (I STILL remember your Wendy’s rant!). And things like this become an active and organic part of my assessment of various ideologies that people come to be possessed by. (Often with just barely a notion of the underlying psychological processes other than “it works for them” where they currently are [trapped]).”
Answer: You’re so binary that you just lumped two completely different groups together as one simplified mass. You aren’t interacting with people who you’ve read, when you go talk to random people at a random restaurant, & so what? It sounds alot like you’ve made the assumption I’ve never had a conversation outside the inters.
G: “A good reason to “learn how to think” and not just regurgitate what others have thought, is that it honors all of the Human variant in these processes. Answer: You need to learn how to use quotation marks. This isn’t the 1st time I’ve pointed this out. I’ve called you out for regurgitating Peterson to the point where you even started copping his style of writing. So who am I regurgitating? The sooner you can tell me the sooner I kan lern 2 thinq.
…Douche
G: “There doesn’t have to be blame in the simple observation that engaging in criminal activity and/or resisting arrest singly or in combination . . . is just stupid. Especially in the cultural context of the West.

Answer: Label it “blame” all you want. I was trying to get across that there are Reasons, greater than BLM rhetoric for why resisting arrest happens. Over your head & through the woods, to Grandmother’s house we go.
G: “You conveniently overlook that these nations where variants of Marxism took hold, were generally places where such mass blood-lettings had not previously occurred (the killing of political prisoners rose from a few dozen in 10 years of Czarist rule, to 100’s of thousands in just 3 years of Marxist rule — to eventually rack up many millions. Answer: I’m conveniently overlooking? A few dozen? Wow, your quest for truth suuuuuure is genuine.
Summary: Benzene Poisoning Makes You Say Stupid Shit Like there’s a difference between Joy & Happiness
@luftballooneyegouge
In what realm is consideration, nonsense?
I preface many of my conversations with you out of respect for your suspected intelligence and free moral agency making you capable of thinking beyond just the clap-trap of ideologies.
If I was mistaken . . . well, I’d rather err on the side of someone being positively more than they first seem to be.
Don’t just regurgitate: think!!
An ideology is a set of Human ideas and/or ideals. Nothing wrong with that so far.
But one is “possessed” . . . when they retire their intellect and stop actively thinking and paying attention for themselves. This is seen in not “using” definitions, but “being used” (owned, limited) by them. This is seen in parroting the ideology’s talking points but not really contending with them as Nietzche proposed, unto them becoming instantiated not just in the urges and emotions but in the actual being of the person.
This results in someone who can then continue contending with the ideas unto them becoming more finely attuned over time . . . rather than just being stuck trying to defend, justify, and dodge statements that might threaten the static, stagnant and dead idea. (It doesn’t change but life and knowledge is always changing so life moves on and leaves the dead and stagnant thing behind where it rots and raises a stink).
I personally don’t think you have a lot of real-time face-to-face conversations with people outside of your own little echo-chamber. Mainly because you seem so ill-equipped to do it even in a relatively “safe” internet environment you can disappear from in a heartbeat — having to resort to rants about restaurants, quotation marks, and the sterile use of static definitions. (Though I do value you calling me on the few occasions when my facts/understanding are not correct!).
If I’ve mis-read this, I would be thoroughly apologetic and quite thankful that you are not as trapped in your ideological bubble as it seems you are by the person manifest in your discussions.
I have no doubt that you emulate to some degree the powerful styles of the most effective people you meet. But there is a difference between just parroting them, and actually contending with what they say and incorporating it within your existence.
Do you REALLY think I’m just exceptionally good at finding the exact set of words and right style of another to communicate these points to the degree of effect I do? I’m not. Rather I’ve listened, contended, epistomologized, instantiated, experimented with interaction, and reproduced the experiences that then independently bring me to similar conclusion.
So there’s far more “me” in them than just a parroting of various thinkers.
OK smart guy.
Under what set of circumstances does resisting arrest, in the context of the West, yield favorable outcome over not resisting.
Questions of guilt or innocence don’t really need to factor in at this point. In what set of circumstances would resisting arrest make your life measurably better in all time-frames?
I was going off remembrances from Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn’s Gulag Archipelago, which is a whopping read. I admit my figures are off by a considerable margin with the Czarist executions of political prisoners. But they are not off in horrendous disparity between the Czarist era and the Marxist era.
The Marxist actively depopulated vast sectors of the civilization for reasons far more petty than even Nicholas II.
@griz
I’m not going to waste my time going over the same shit all over again.
Your accusations & proclaimed assumptions are just attempts to keep me on the line.
I’m hanging up now.

The ideologies you are borrowing from are too low resolution to address the social and existential issues at hand.

Educating oneself as to the value of personal beliefs is a far better option over just parroting the words of another (or just links to the words of another about the words of another).
I’m not sure what to say about not wanting to bother understand why one believes what they choose to believe.
@griz
One doesn’t want to waste one’s own time.
You seem obsessed with wasting mine.
@luftballooneyegouge
Not making something meaningful out of one’s life seems more the waste.
@griz
Spinning one’s wheels talking to someone who just repeats them-self Is Not Making Something Meaningful.
It’s very much a distraction from one’s own life.
You’ve been wasting my time for a week now with this thread after I made it crystal clear, I had said all I cared to, which was addressing line by line every bullshit thing you could pull out of your ass.
I was looking at the member’s section the other day & noticed there are many site members that will stop by and not post. There’s many I’ve never even seen,… before checking out the member’s section.
You, more than anyone else pour out the highest amount of text here, to the point it’s almost your blog.
All these silent members might’ve figured that interacting here would be a waste of their time, like what you’ve been doing to me.
In the About Section under Who Is SoulSequel is the following:
“SoulSequel is made up of a collection of people who have too much time on their hands.”
SInce you write the most on here, this applies to you more than anyone else.
Your gilded misogyny & reactionary ideology is somewhere between boring and tedious.
Your long-winded style just amplifies the tedium.
Right before spitfire ran off, he blamed me for ruining this site. Maybe he was right?
All I know for sure, is that you’ve been ruining it for me, for a long time now, but I’m going to stay because I like these folks who don’t waste my time.
…but you need not respond, as you are now
B L O C K E D
@luftballooneyegouge
You repeat the same talking points that you believed to be true over and over. Is that not a similar spinning of the wheels?
But there’s benefit in a belief system where one can still value the individuality and input of another even in disgreement. I listen very carefully to everything you say, even if it just seems like a rerun.
I thought about this for a few days. What do you mean by culture? Certain segments of society are still in, a part of an overarching larger culture – does this affect things? Can a person experience multiple cultures during different parts of the day? Because we live in a day of instant communication can a person have a culture outside what the societal norm is?
@Jear77
“Culture” in the context of this question could be likened to a tribe defined by a certain base spirit, set of perceptions and motivations departing from the historic structure of the meta-tribe .
One can then further separate them by whether their actions map into amalgamation from the outside (a good thing) or dissolution from the inside (not a good thing, for reasons I can go into, but resembling the process of a cancer).
Most of the new presenting off-shoot cultures of today tend more towards dissolution and chaos (based on a loss of personal meaning) than towards amalgamation and rejuvenation of the old order (a recipe for long-lived stable societies pictorially presented in the mythologies of very ancient cultures like the Egyptians.)
It’s a pity that the Western cultures who finally managed to articulate these principles are proving such unmitigated fools and understanding and applying them. It’s like we’ve slipped back into less conscious forms social awareness.
