If you hate inequality, you hate life.

Whoa! I know. Very stark. But consider this. (And pressed for time, so no spell-check!)

In human populations, even if everyone starts at a focal point of total equilibrium, those who start up the ladder of success soon become very successful and opportunities to succeed rapidly become so numerous they can’t pursue them all.
And from both the focus of equilibrium AND from the pinnacle of success, set-backs tend to multiply, options to succeed dry up. A market down-turn. You lose everything. You become depressed. You start to drink. Support structures like family and friend fall away because you’re drunk and depressed. You become homeless.
And these are NON-linear progressions!

The same happens in animal and plant communities. If some small fluctuation favors one species over others, it flourishes exponentially and quickly alters the local ecosystem in its favor and things go non-linear. Those species who cannot succeed, either move away or die.

The very laws of thermodynamics upon which life depends (and science formulates it’s laws), would not happen without inequalities. Inequalities in the atmosphere and the ocean are what create the temperature and weather cycles upon which life depends.

If the solar system reaches equilibrium, it flies apart.
If the sun reaches equilibrium, it explodes.
If the galaxy reaches equilibrium, it is consumed by the black hole at it’s core.

The theorized very beginning of our existence, the Big Bang started with a surmised focus of totally equality (nothingness) then (for reasons yet unknown) exploded. And if the ejecta from this event had not distributed itself unequally, matter would not have coalesced and we would just be an empty realm of uniform background radiation.

Consider that in the past 200 years many human societies have tried to tackle the problem of inequality. And they have all met with the exact same success over time — none. Regardless of whether their government were left-leaning or right-leaning.

I’m sorry to say, that inequality seems to be axiomatic of life. The only absolutely reliable equalizers, are catastrophies. War. Famine. Pestilence. Natural cataclysms. Death. (Did you notice the 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse hiding in there?)

We seem to be wasting a lot of time and energy trying to eradicate something . . . essential for life. We can perhaps artificially “make things fairer” in the very short-term by knocking down the exponential upward climb and handicapping the exponential downward fall. But at very great expense fiscally, physically, psychologically — did I miss any?

But this seems to be something we are going to have to develop better coping strategies that will have to involve accepting inherent inequality as a necessity of life itself.
