“My formula for human greatness is amor fati: that one wants to have nothing different, not forward, not backward, not in all eternity. Not merely to bear the necessary, still less to conceal it. . . . but to love it.” – Nietzsche

I think if you can step back from your own logic and emotions, take an outsiders or third persons perspective, but still know and feel everything that you know and feel, it is possible to “detach” and see the good and the bad in a way that grows you as an individual, therefore leaning into and “loving” it all, because then even the bad stiff will be good because they have made you grow in some sense.
For example: last week my boyfriend and I broke up, we are best friends we both admit that, but we were fulfilling to one another in ways we should have been to have a successful relationship, we both tried, but we just couldn’t pull it off. We agreed to separate, give one another some personal time and still be considered friends, our lives are entwined. It’s bittersweet, I miss some stuff we shared, we learned a lot from one another about what we do and do not want in a partner. The good things make me sad because I miss them, that makes me miss him and us. But the bad began to outweigh the good, and that isn’t beneficial for self-growth for either of us.
So I consider that chapter of my life sad, and happy. I made a friend, I have a constant in my life that I didn’t have before, but I lost a really good partner, because he is a great person. I wouldn’t change it. It’s considered “bad” overall, at least from an outsider perspective, because what breakup isn’t? But I still love that part of my story.
@fosheet I am sorry to hear about the loss of your relationship, but it sounds like you are coping with it in the most emotionally healthy way possible, and anything less would probably be counter-productive.
Some of the things you mentioned are things I think about a lot. What should we expect from a relationship? I agree with what you said about evaluating when the sads outweigh the happy’s. One thing I think about is the importance of having a growth oriented relationship. Does our partner make us better? do they propel us forward on our path? is it necessary that our partner be able to move us? How do we find these growth oriented relationships?
In the past I was a relationship addict, and never gave myself time to heal. I would go from one relationship to another in order to satisfy some need in me that the prior relationship didn’t meet, and then later when I thought I was with “the one”, I would be sitting around wondering why I wasn’t as happy as I thought id be?
I realize now that a big part of it was that I wasn’t asserting my needs.
Do you know that we are vast and deep women, and I think it will be hard for any man to understand us? That is what I think. But maybe one day we find one who wants to try!
@Scarlett you know… I try not to think of myself that way, but my friend’s, and even my ex said the exact same thing….
@fosheet I don’t want to speak to your situation, but for me, trauma left me very complex.
@Scarlett trauma changes everyone it touches… Just look at ACE Adverse Childhood Experiences test and scores in relation to childhood outcomes.
It would be possible… if i were independently wealthy!
@Jear77 You quite often equate money with happiness…you will never be satisfied. You will never be happy. You’re too blinded by constantly concentrating on the wrong things.
@immortal_pirate if i were wealthy i could concentrate on the right things because money woes wouldn’t be an issue!

Life here with Immortal Pirate is almost like living with another me. We never argue because we are thinking the same things. We are doing life’s tasks as one with 4 arms and 4 hands, all coordinated.
Is it happy and do I love every minute of it??? Well, the cats make sure that we get a measure of not happy moments. They must take great pains and have extensive math skills to plot out the length of my barefoot stride. They have to vomit in the exactly right spot, and have that puke pile exactly the right coldness and wetness for me to step into it and remind me that life has it’s bad moments, too.
I can’t say ‘no’ to that, but I personally can’t see it. I mean, if I can be totally truthful here, it is difficult at times to love any moments of my life, much less every minute. It isn’t to say it is terrible and whatnot, but I feel like I require a lot for me to feel love. That could actually be problematic in other parts of my life thinking about it.
No, but luckily it’s impossible to hate every minute of our lives.
