What is the least effective argument you’ve ever heard? Yesterday, the governor of Kentucky argued, “you can’t regulate evil.” what does that even mean? That was all he said, too. He obviously didn’t take English 101 and learn how to support his thesis.
Then there’s “taking away guns to stop gun violence is like taking away spoons to stop obesity.” Whaaaa? I have a problem with this analogy. If the government takes away our spoons, we can make cardboard ones. We can make mashed potatoes and leave them in a pile on the stove. However, eating in such a way might lead people to not eat as much, and therefore there might be a drop in obesity rates. if you think the obesity rate would not be affected, you must take the exact same stance to defend gun control using a far more complicated argument than, “heh heh, blaming mass murder on guns is like blaming obesity on spoons.”

When I can’t think of any good reason to have zero gun control, any argument seems stupid, but here’s one, to be armed to resist government dictatorship.
What do you think is going on right now when the majority of Americans are FOR gun control and your government refuses to establish it.
But specific to the reasons behind the 2nd Ammendment. Even if a civilian militia was armed with automatic weapons that can fire 600+ rounds per minute; how is Buford going to take on a tank, or an Apache gunship, or, or, or, including trained soldiers that would rather be on the side of the power, versus the moronic sheep that prefer to be herded, but pretend that they are in charge?
Btw, Austrailia has not had one mass shooting in 7,280 days since they established gun control after their last mass murder. Must be unfathomable to a country that has had more than one mass murder a day in the last 475 days, or when Chicago has 59 murders in a month. Even if these numbers are not 100% accurate, even if they were off by 25%, and they’re not, the numbers are just too staggering to contemplate.
@spitfire3dc out of curiosity… do you REALLY think that ANY number of people rising up against the federal government would be effective in this day and age, with the weapons the federal government has at its disposal. Even if literally everyone – including the police, the FBI, etc. (save the president, the vice president and his private security force) stopped what they were doing to join a massive violent uprising against the government… do you seriously think that anyone would survive such an uprising?

Availability of guns is actually secondary to the issue that the people that want to kill people exist. Why?
Why do more people per capita in the USA want to kill other people?
What is their reasoning, demented or not, and why is the ratio of people who believe a gun is a “solution” so high in the first place.
More Americans hate each other, if you look at the numbers, than any other country in the world by a long “shot”. There is a general hatred of the icon that is America by another group of crazies that are thought of as power hungry terrorists and that problem hasn’t gone away by continuing to shoot and bomb them into submission.
The big question, that really hasn’t been officially addressed is what is the pure motivation of people wanting to kill others?
One reason the NRA continues to be supported is the main tenet that Americans have a right to defend themselves. Who are you defending yourselves from? From people who are dissatisfied by their personal status quo usually as it relates to money, but what is money, but a mechanism to measure one’s self esteem. That is at the core.
Even this bozo in Vegas. His self esteem is tied to money, but his might be a little more complicated. He has obviously had a few lucky streaks in his gambling. Those highs set the opposite low. Everything ALWAYS balances out in one way or another. Drug addiction and alcohol addiction are clear examples of that as well.
America as a whole has had a very high high for a long time. Maintaining a managed high is difficult and at some point the piper gets paid.
I was lucky, I set my lows first and just waited for Nature to balance it out for me on the other side. My current high is not ridiculous and part of that is because I appreciate what I have in comparison to what I had. I don’t have huge expectations. I have zero desire to take what is not mine and that includes material wealth and more significantly, a life that is not mine. I am not envious in any way, shape, or form of those who have more than me because what I have is correlated to what I have earned. That is enough for me. I ask myself, what I have not done, if there is something I want and then, if I can, I just do it.
This is all a consciously driven mentality and while it is semi promoted down there, it is also accompanied by this sense of entitlement that everyone deserves it, regardless of their effort and preparation to earn it.
seems simple but it just may be at the foundation of why a seemingly rich society in general, is being so severely affected by a fringe, albeit a very large fringe, that is screaming gimme, gimme, gimme.
You seem to appreciate my ramblings so let me continue with this little odd gem. When I was about 12, I was in a marching band. A drum and bugle corp. it was all about discipline and teaching kids how to DO something. The guy who ran the corp was a tough SOB. MR. Trotter. He was like a drill Sargent but it’s only now that I can see the deep love he had for us all. His tough act was a cover up that maybe even he, himself didn’t see until he walk along beside us on parade and know that HE had accomplished something in making us perform to our own personal expectations to be the best we could be. That was the thing he taught is. Not how to march in synch, but to want to march in synch. He had this thing he used to tell the parents during recruitment. “Teach a kid to blow a horn and he will never blow a safe” so hokey, but probably so true. He showed us that we could start in a situation where we couldn’t even make a sound come out of that contraption and with diligence alone, could get better. To be the best merely required more effort. It was a simple math equation and while talent helped to add that “it” factor; we could if we wanted to be a part of a sum greater than its parts.
Hopefully you see the correlation I am trying to draw, and I’m not sure I have really accomplished much in that regard, but I’m glad I just gave Mr Trotter a breath of life and recognised the significance he played in shaping who I am. Maybe it all comes down to his efforts there is nothing inside me that wants to blow anything up.
In one sense they have a point… but they could have made stronger analogies. Here’s the gist of what I think what they were saying: if you outlaw guns the only people who have guns are criminals and law abiding citizens can’t defend themselves.
But if you have a record of everyone who buys anything and cross reference it against a national database would certainly help… but it isn’t the entire story. Even screening for mental illness isn’t truly effective as that’s something that is self reported.
This man who did this most recent shooting must have been planning on doing this for a LONG time. Authorities are still unsure WHY.

You most certainly can regulate evil: in yourself. I would hope a Governor could come up with something more enlightened like, “If we all were better regulators of evil in ourselves, we would not need so many laws and agencies aimed at policing evil”.
Most of the gun-lobby arguments fall flat on their face just a few steps out of the starting blocks. The problem is, they are more unified and dedicated to their cause than those who say they want to control gun-violence by putting some reasonable controls on the number of guns available for it, or tracking those who hoard them.
Those seeking to “do evil” might still turn to spoons.
But a hail of spoons from the 32rd story of a hotel would not have inflicted nearly so many casualties!

Such good idea from Jear77 about a cross-referenced national registry of guns. That way it would be known when someone owns more than the normal amount. I think I would be concerned if there was an automatic gun with a multi-bullet holding magazine in the house. I mean, what does a person need with that??? If one was to hunt a deer with something that empties pow-pow-pow-pow-pow-pow-pow-pow-pow-pow-pow into a deer in the woods, well that is not sporting. The deer doesn’t stand a chance. What exactly is “normal” or a normal amount of guns and weapons? I am comfortable owning a small 5-shot revolver handgun. As for Immortal Pirate and his son, they seem to be happy with with 870 Remington shot gun that loads about 4 or 5 bullets and they shoot cans and targets at the rifle range. One squeeze of the trigger per bullet. If I go along, I have a one bullet Rossi shot gun. I take one shot at the target and put it down because it was loud and I am a one-shot-wonder — even if I always miss the target. Well, self defense and a father and son can shooting outing — I am comfortable with that. To me, that is “normal”. I know very little about guns. I took the gun safety classes. I passed all tests for gun safety, but you can tell that I don’t know anything.
Oh yeah, I went off on a tangent. The least effective argument I hear is from the “Flat Earth” people, who actually believe that the Earth is flat with a big dome over it. From the ISS in space, it is clear to see that the Earth is round. Well, I make it a point to not argue. I am not good at debating and arguing. I leave them with their stupid notions because it is no skin off of my nose if they think the Earth is flat. I shake my head and walk away.
@ladybarbara you are cute, and smart! the thing that bothers me is people saying gun control advocates want to take away their guns. we don’t want to take away everyone’s guns. We just want to make it more difficult for people to get them or at least the kind used in the Las Vegas shooting
