memory-it is a very funny thing. I am reading this book, Moonwalking with Einstein. In it, the author tells the story of a man who forgot everything, and one who remembered everything. so if you had a choice which would you choose. forgetting everything was not inclusive of activities of daily living. the man could still walk, talk, drive etc.
how good is your own memory? I offer an experiment. the next time you have a to do list or grocery list of more than seven items, use the memory palace technique. this involves mentally placing the items into various rooms in your childhood home. See how well you are able to remember the items after you have done this.

If we forgot everything it would force us to live in the moment.. If we remember everything it might distract us from living in it.
I’d choose the latter, because experience allows us to make better judgements associated with being more productive and we would still retain the capacity to choose how to use that data.
Your question motivated me to see if there have been any recent developments on figuring out where memories are stored and I came across this:
MIT researchers have shown, for the first time ever, that memories are stored in specific brain cells. By triggering a small cluster of neurons, the researchers were able to force the subject to recall a specific memory. By removing these neurons, the subject would lose that memory.May 19, 2016
