Music thread…because, why not?

Over the past week or so I’ve had some really important questions that I wanted to post here. But now I can’t remember any of them. WTF. I guess I should start keeping notes or something.

I wanted to share this song. This is one of my most favorite artists. You may not be into hip hop/rap, but take a listen. The video it worth watching.

Show me something awesome.

Yours was a pretty powerful video. Really pushed a number of buttons and touched on a serious issue. Made me think about how seriously we all seem to take an issue that really is up to each individuals choice to be who they are, regardless of the judgements imposed by others who are too narrow minded to accept what they have no right to judge.

I’m not sure if you will find my choice awesome, but I was driving today and heard this and really started listening beyond my normal tap my fingers kind of mode and I thought…shit,,, this could be my theme song. There were certain lyrics that popped out loudly to say, “This is you!”

@spitfire3dc This is from one of the greatest albums of all time – Supertramp’s, Crime of the Century. Ironically, when I was attacked as a teenager in my home; I was beat up in my sister’s room where all her albums were laying on the floor. The police took this album because it had evidence on it. These songs consoled me for years before and after my attack.

(Please don’t feel bad that you triggered a memory of mine. It’s a memory I am used to, and it’s part of who I am today.)

This version with a full orchestra is absolutely gorgeous.

@Gina I’m sincerely glad you have been able to move on and being the person you have become is a bonus to anyone who knows your heart.

You seem to have a broad range of genres that you can appreciate. One of my favourite albums of all time is Tom Cochrane’s Symphony Sessions Here is a sampler:

Best time to listen it is at dusk as you are ready to mellow out, but need a kick in the ass to bring an energy to your relaxation. Kick up the volume and let the orchestration fill you space.

@spitfire3dc Thanks for your share! It’s quite awesome. Songs that express the never-ending questions on the meaning of life are always good songs to ponder on. Especially so because I believe most anyone can relate.

Logic is great. I first heard him at our summer music festival, Bumbershoot a couple of years ago, or was that last year? All the festivals are blending together.

I found this article about this song you posted.

“I’ve been on the low / I been taking my time / I feel like I’m out of my mind / It feel like my life ain’t mine / Who can relate?”

The opening lines of Logic’s most successful song to date are, quite literally, a cry for help. The title of the track, “1-800-273-8255,” is the phone number for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.

In a series of tweets the week the song was released, the 27-year-old rapper explained the motivation behind his music. “Over the years so many of you guys have told me that my music has helped you through so many tough times,” he wrote. “Many of you have told me its even saved your life. I’m beyond humbled. But I felt I haven’t done enough. … I made this song for all of you who are in a dark place and can’t seem to find the light.”

This is the first Logic song I bought. I use the term, “Oh my goodness, oh my goodness, oh my god!” often since I heard this song.

@Gina Thanks for sharing. I have fallen in love with Logic since I first heard him. His lyrics are clever and his arrangements are near perfect. I hope I get to see him perform one day.

I heard that song on Pandora somewhat recently and liked it. First time seeing the music video. It was so much better with the video. It having Luke from Modern Family and Don Cheadle in it is pretty awesome as well.

Life has thrown me a real curve ball over these last few days. A totally unexpected curveball that’s made me very sad for multiple reasons though it could possibly be a good thing, but probably not. Basically, I had a super intense conversation with a friend recently that included her informing me that a) she’s in a toxic relationship (a relationship that’s been going on for the two and half years I’ve known her) b) she’s always had feelings for me and c) she doesn’t think she wants to be around me anymore. After said conversation I bought her pizza and told her I care about her a lot and if she needs me I’ll be around. Then I gave her a big ol’ hug and said good bye.

It was really hard to hear all of that and she cried in front of me for the first time ever. I had to stop myself from crying too. I don’t know how to handle it. The thought of being with her has crossed my mind on more than one occasion. It’s never really been at the forefront but it’s been back there for sure. Popping up every once in awhile while just the two of us are at the bar or the record store and wondering if people thought we were a couple. They probably thought we were pretty cute too.

I didn’t say any of this because I didn’t want to make it about me and my confusion. It probably would’ve made things worse. Really, I just want her to find the confidence to get out of her relationship and get her life together. Both of which she’ll probably have to do without me. Everything else including my bullshit is secondary. Oh and we’re both quasi-music journalist at the same small publication and next weekend we have an interview to go take care of. I’m not sure how that’s going to play out but it’s going to be hard. OH and she wrote this really beautiful and moving poem about me.

    So it’s a pickle.

But for the music: The War On Drugs put out A Deeper Understanding on Friday – the day of the intense conversation. The whole album feels weirdly appropriate for what I’m dealing with right now (i.e. titles like “You Don’t Have to Go”) and it’s really all I’ve listened to since. I can’t tell if these are happy songs or not. Here’s “Strangest Thing” because life is strange and complicated and confusing and sometimes cruel.

Sorry to be a bummer on this thread but I had to get it out. I like the anonymity so I don’t have talk about my problems in real life like how a well adjusted person would.
