Economic Illiteracy: This week, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez “swung by” to say goodbye to a restaurant where she used to work. What she didn’t say is that it is closing because the owners can’t afford New York City’s soon-to-be $15 minimum wage — the very job-killing policy Ocasio-Cortez and her fellow Democrats want to impose nationwide.
The restaurant I used to work at is closing its doors,” Ocasio-Cortez tweeted on Monday. “I swung by today to say hi one last time, and kid around with friends like old times.”
She was referring to the popular Coffee Shop in Union Square, which was frequented by A-list celebrities and featured on “Sex and the City.” Despite its popularity, the Coffee Shop is going out of business. Why?

Your article leaves out the huge factor sited by non-editorial articles covering the closing, they had huge rent being in Manhattan as well as being in a popular spot.

They cut the actual quote short to fit their agenda.
From the New York Post article: “The rents are very high and now the minimum wage is going up and we have a huge number of employees.”
Both of the articles also don’t mention there’s a Starbucks that opened practically next door to them.
The Coffee Shop is owned and run by former fashion models. That statement speaks for itself, but also there’s the connection that a well-managed restaurant of its size would never need a staff of around 150 employees. Even with all these employees, The Coffee Shop is notorious for bad service.
Tipped Food service workers minimum rate will go to $10/hour & not $15/hour. In any waitered-restaurant, the wait-staff will be the largest amount of workers for this kind of operation.
@luftballooneyegouge Thank you. I was about to say what you said. Sub-par coffee and sub-par food is what I also read. They were closed down by the health department in 2007. Sounds like they are not the best run place in NYC.

The rent and location were factors that were growing organically and that the businesses were dealing with effectively.
The sudden increase in minimum wage is a poorly conceived, and even reckless artifact of identity group social reconstructionism.
The wage curve has been relatively flat across-the-board save in the highest levels of management, since working women effectively doubled the size of the workforce after World War II.
There seems to have been absolutely insufficient thought given to the devastating mid- and long-term effects on the economic structure. (Loss of jobs and businesses at the low end; making entrepreneurial venture too costly; inflation working up the hierarchy and rendering all advances to minimum wage earners a moot point in 3 to 7 years; the effect that artificially devaluing the currency will have on debt which low income earners always seem to have a lot of and high-income earners tend to benefit from).
While there was a problem that needed a addressing, the plan to address it through identity politics is reckless and irresponsible: apparently aimed at nothing more then the appearance of short-term benefit for a specific class of “victims”.
(A Group which interestingly enough used to include all of us until we decided to make a proper sacrifice and do something about it)
@griz You don’t know you are talking about. There wasn’t a “sudden” increase in minimum wage. The minimum wage for employees of large employers was $11.00 in 2017. On December 31, 2017, it went up to $13.00. New Changes: On December 31, 2018, minimum wage will become $15.00; which is still NOT a living wage. The rents for the businesses have skyrocketed along with rents for housing.
How come no one screams, “How are we going to pay for this?!” when corporations get tax breaks? Why aren’t owners of buildings shamed when they raise the rent so high people have to shut their businesses, and the workers have to commute into the city because they can’t afford the high rents? Where is that Rage????
