Pictures and Memories

As a photographer, I form very profound bond with my pictures. Not just the “where” and “what” of the moment, but things like scent, temperature, thoughts, feelings, the journey to-and-from. They become “events”.

Perhaps it has to do with each final picture you see, sometimes taking considerable adventures to get there, and hours of setting up, waiting for the right light, and shooting a subject from every conceivable angle (and probably a few most don’t conceive!) and then hours or even days of editing. Plus, out of 500 snaps, perhaps only 30 or so will go on to public viewing and then only about 4 of these will become “grand finalists” in the whole process.

I had thought the photographic record of an entire 2011 trip lost, but managed to recover it just the other day. This is a moment forever frozen in time for me.

It is Hell’s Canyon from the Kloppenheimer Grade. It’s the deepest canyon in North America from peak-to-river. Grand Canyon covers more area; but this is deeper. It takes hours of back-country driving on dirt roads to get there; and even locals warned me against trying because so many get lost and the roads can wash out in a storm.
But I had to see it.

And now, so do you!

So share: do you “bond” with your photos like I do? So much so that you could remember something like “Kloppenheimer Grade”, or close your eyes and smell the wind even 6 years later!?

    Oh yeah. I bond.

I especially bond in a way that re-ignites emotional states of being and sensory experiential mind sets.

This picture ignites several things. This was a glass of apple cider that had been aged for 30 months in a barrel used for bourbon. The bourbon perimeter with the tart, effervescent, apple edge, served with a hint of sunset, triggered a sense of contentment/gratitude/stupor…i intend to aim for that end goal again at some point soon.

I love taking photos. I definitely bond with my photos. Some times my memory isn’t the best, but a photo will take me right back there. I dig how technology will organize my photos. I was terrible with my print photos, as they are just sitting in boxes. But, Google+ photos gives me those, 1 year ago today photos. It’s a great way to monitor the progress of my garden, and remind me what we were doing.

The first photo is from our harvest seasons ago. It’s one of our nieces holding gorgeous beets. I roasted them, and I got my family to enjoy beets for the first time. Most people have only eaten beets from a jar, but there is nothing like freshly picked, roasted beets. It was simply, a life-changing experience.

The 2nd photo I took on an evening walk the first day of fall, yesterday. We have had so much smoke in the skies from the BC fires, and all the fires in our state. We could not see the sky for over a month. The sun was out blazing, but it was filtered through this orange’ish, brown, ash. I captured the white clouds and blue sky on our lake on our walk. Shortly after that, we found a rainbow that last throughout the beautiful sunset.

These photos let me feel like life finally returned to normal.

P.S. I know I have told you before, but you are an excellent photographer. Keep snapping!!!

Walk to lake, first day of fall – 2017. We can finally see the sky. It rained hard for 4 days. I welcomed the rain by running outside, laughing and dancing.
    Fires gone.

I like that photo. Visually it is an interesting mix of balance ( the reflection) and flow ( not putting the mirror point in the middle of the frame)
