It’s a quote from a very prolific writer circa 600BC. There are many translations of it, so I would offer a paraphrase to include the best of all translations.
The Holy God of Israel offers this solemn counsel: your salvation requires you turn back to me and cease your silly efforts to “save yourself”; for you cannot despite your best efforts. In quietness and confidence [trust] shall be your strength. But you would have none of it.
‘We’ll rush off on horses’, you say. So rush off you will. Just not far enough to outrun your problems! ‘We shall flee on swift steeds’, you say. But do you think your imagined pursuers ride old nags?
You’ll become so paranoid that thousands will run in circles and flee at the threat of just one attacker. And all that will remain of your being here is a flagpole on a hill without a flag; or a signpost with the sign ripped off. I know many might “choke” on the terms “God” and “salvation”. But consider all the many “gods” people pursue and myriad of methods by which people seek to “be safe” or “saved”.
“If you can’t stand the heat, keep out of the kitchen”
The ultimate logical conclusion of that line of thought doesn’t stand up to examination. If you can stand life, get out.
I have read books of quotes. There are some I like to use here and there, but I live by the quotes from the Gospel, the quotes of Jesus.
Frankly, most wisdom I contrast to that.
Even moreso, I have had times when I have had “my entire world” crash down around me, where I witnessed evidence that destroyed assumptions about physical reality… and the one testimony that always grounded me was the testimony of Jesus Christ.
Because while I can doubt the reality of everything… but that. And from there, I have worked my way back. Multiple times.
