i work in retirment homes, and in dining room specifically… so every day after dinner as residents are leave the dining hall, i say things like “Good night shirley, see you tomorrow” and id say 85% of them, in the 5 + years ive done this… say something like “Well lets hope so” and then they laugh while i stare in mute discomfort because i know they are joking about being around another day. this might sound dire, and not the funny kind of groaner as much as the Oh Gawd why did she have to share that?! but that kind of self awareness and humour is one of the greatest lessons i have learned from serving seniors. and i also learned i’d best laugh along and not say something that reflects that i am aware they are 87 years old, or else it becomes sad and not funny.

A few years back my dad took the constantly reminding me that he’s no spring chicken. Like you I didn’t know how to respond.
A few years back when I was in Florida I took a very specific picture. And now when he starts the whole “I’m no spring chicken” routine I’ll show him this picture saying that I was thinking of him when I took it.
It’s an old Buzzard sitting in a tree!

I am formally announcing my candidacy for President of the United States in 2020…yeah, that’s a silly statement, and one that would make some folks groan.
” I dream of a world with a blunderbuss in every closet; a harpsichord in every master bedroom; and a large oaken steering wheel in every living room!”
The first thing I thought of was a story told by George Burns about how short Gracie Allen was and how she could barely see over the dash board of their big car. Coming up the driveway at 3:00 pm, the sun blinded her, and she would run into the white picket fence and knock it down. Putting the sun visor down did not work for Gracie. She could barely peek over the dashboard, so, her view was so much lower. With the visor down she still got sun blinded and drove through the white picket fence, knocking it down. Then George added an extra length of cardboard to the sun visor and it worked. Gracie could see the fence through the small slit below the extended visor, above the dashboard. ———– One day George was driving the car and started to come up the driveway. The sun blinded him, so he put the visor down. With the extension, it fully blocked his whole view and he ran into the picket fence and knocked it over. Gracie came out of the house and gave George one of her Gracie Allen “looks”. ———— “Oh, George!!!”
Some nights Gracie needed to be cheered up and she would ask George to say something that would make her laugh. He would turn to her and say, “Googy-Googy-Googy”. That was enough for Gracie. She would laugh and go right to sleep.

IOWA CITY!?!?!?!?!?
YOU’LL NEVER FIND ME!!!!!!!!!!!
@luftballooneyegouge
” . . . take me down to Iowa city where the girls are green and the grass is pretty!”
@griz There’s steam tunnels under the streets that go on and on for miles. We used to get all teened up’d and run around in ’em 20th century style.

@luftballooneyegouge
I knew there was a lot of hot air there but I was not aware it had been so effectively harnessed!
I truck through there from time to time. Maybe you could take me on a tour! ( especially if there’s beer involved!) :grin:
@griz I don’t live in Iowa City,… but you’re getting warmer.
TOO WARMER!
@luftballooneyegouge
“TOO WARMER” is tarping 47,000 lbs of onions in California, with 42º temps and 13% R.H.!
(Amana Colonies? Brooklyn? Clive?)

@immortal_pirate
Stranger things have happened!
If I was a citizen I would vote for you over any of the people that ran in the last election!
@griz I don’t want to be responsible for fucking up my country any more than it already is…therefor, I’m not running for that office.
@immortal_pirate
But now would be a prime time to give a go!
Consider that right now, someone could be a major fuck-up as POTUS and still come out smelling like a rose!
@griz …I still don’t want that job…
@immortal_pirate
I could help you with your speeches.
