Lifestyle guru recommends we have hobbies in five areas. Do you find you are already doing this? What are your five?
| Category | Purpose | Examples |
| One to make you money | Financial security & skill monetization | Freelancing, coding, selling crafts, or a “side hustle.” |
| One to keep you in shape | Physical health & longevity | Running, yoga, swimming, or team sports. |
| One to be creative | Stress relief & self-expression | Painting, playing an instrument, cooking, or writing. |
| One to build knowledge | Intellectual growth & mental acuity | Reading, learning a new language, or listening to educational podcasts. |
| One to evolve your mindset | Emotional resilience & perspective | Meditation, journaling, or practicing mindfulness. |

Lifestyle guru sells motivation.
Lifestyle guru sells you a load of things to do that one could never completely cram into a modern life schedule, leading to feeling inadequate and unmotivated from not being able to accomplish five different hobbies.
Lifestyle guru >>>((resells))<<< motivation and numerous hoops to jump through to feel well. Repeat-customer base…
Erik Erikson sells coddling developmental aged kids. Education admins change teacher-centric educating to student-centric education which requires kids to be self motivated. Education admins turn to gurus. Whole generations come up feeling like shit with declining intellect.
Pooopin' on the party's my hobby.
@LuftBalloonEyeGouge
I don’t think I agree with your outlook on life. I think all of it springs from consciousness. Some is helpful, some not. Sometimes I like to sit by the teachers. I think they come in all forms. It might be a waterway deep in a holler or it might be a psychologist or a scientist. I like to gather knowledge, I guess. I think as long as we do not cling to any of it too tightly it doesn’t hurt anything.
@Scarlett2
Sounds like you’re going to dismiss what I’m saying, for what I am completely assuming is to avoid the discomfort of the loss of your financial spiritual investments. Cling…
@LuftBalloonEyeGouge nah-not dismissing. I get that everything is a construct-all part of the matrix. Humans evolved to slowly kill ourselves, others, and the planet. Humanity is basically an unhappy accident in my view. However, I find this nihilistic view of nothingness to be unhelpful as well. So I choose to engage with the constructs. Not suggesting you do as I do. I think we can all do what we want as purposeless animals on this rock. Try and not hurt other people if we can keep from it- meantime, man, what a ride!
@Scarlett2
You literally mislabeled me and started some nonsense about a movie, I hate, to completely dismiss everything I said.
Total hypocrisy from start to end.
I think this world has a shitload of room for improvement. I’m pointing to problems others that work in those professions are admitting all the time on reddits for teachers. Burnout is at an all time high, as is mental illness. But go ahead and suggest hobbies as the solution. So you want to data mine everybody else’s, what’s your five hobbies. Do you really really have five?
@LuftBalloonEyeGouge I don’t think I ever suggested hobbies as a solution for mental illness. You’re putting words in my mouth. I was making light conversations about hobbies. I thought this site was for starting conversations about different things. Sure I hike, read, study psychology and blog. I won’t be engaging in this further. Good day, sir.
@Scarlett2
Lifestyle gurus are literally in the mental wellness racket. Sorry I tried to have a conversation. I didn’t see the light-conversation-only requisites.
5 Hobbies? Hmmmm… let me think…
First hobby I need is one for income. Well, I don’t have one of those. I’ve done my time earning money. I feel that I’ve earned enough. I just have no desire to make more.
2nd is one for keeping in shape. I don’t have one of those either. I mean hobby not shape. Wait… I mean I definitely have a shape, I just dont have a hobby that involves my shape. My shape is not bad and it’s not good. It’s serviceable.
3rd is creative. I do that. I mean doing creative things. I’ll create things as the need or mood strikes. It’s difficult to explain to someone the things I do that I deem creative. I used to draw and paint a lot but I haven’t done that in many years.
4th is to build knowledge. I suppose my LBC (Little British Car) is good for that. Most recently I had to pull the engine and transmission to replace the throwout bearing. I learned a lot during that exercise. Learning about the LBC is fun and satisfying.
5th is mindset evolution. Well I suppose reading would fall into that category. That as well as sitting on the toilet pondering civilization, universal truths and naval peering.
@rainmaker This is interesting- would love to read more about your creative pursuits. I feel like I like to incorporate things that help my brain in some way.
@Scarlett2
I have close friends who are creative ALL the time. One musician, 3 painters, 2 writers, a few who are just bonkers. I, myself, am not one of these people. My creativity is mild and pale and comes in waves. Ones own creativity is what that person wants it to be. Creativity can be how socks are put away. Everyone creates. I think that recognizing one own creativity is an act of creation. If you take time to do a thing and do it in your own image (not repeating a task taught, but putting your own idea or vision into the thing) THAT is creativity. EVERYONE is creative. Even if that creativity manifests itself in how they drive a car by creatively breaking the rules. Creativity is not good or bad. It doesn’t need to be admired or appreciated by anyone but you. Just bring something forth that entertains you.
@rainmaker I creatively drive my automatic car with two feet. The next time someone tries to tell me that I’ll get mixed up between the gas and the brake, I will cite my creative expression of vehicle operation.
@mamajoy
You could get REALLY creative and use your left foot for the gas and your right foot for the break.
I am…kind of sort of. I actually struggle with maintaining routines, so while I may start out with good intention my plans usually end up in the land of tomorrows.
Luckily I have one hobby/habit that is consistent and touches on several categories: money, creativity and knowledge. This would be freelance web design/development and I actually really love nerding out on that stuff. I also like video games, I think that works on my left and right side of the brain a little bit.
My keeping in shape would be pilates, yoga and working out, though I don’t do this nearly enough.
And my mindet would be, meditating (still working on this one), and taking care of my mini farm. For me, tending to my animals can be therapeutic and it really brings me a lot of satisfaction and enjoyment.
What are your 5?
Hobbies??? Well, I like to garden. That is a hobby. Taking on the challenge of hot desert gardening in soil that is not fit to plant in. In California, I could plant a garden and nothing spoiled it. From seed to cooking it, everything turned out great. The real challenge is desert gardening. Plants are growing strong, and then a sudden hail storm beats everything down and kills it all. Or, it is going strong and the plants are lush, and the Summer heat bakes everything and kills all my plants. Airizona gardening is a real challenge. Immortal Pirate built me a greenhouse and that helps.
I guess that hobby #2 is cooking, but I really don’t like to cook.
Staying fit??? What’s that? There is nothing at a gym that would interest me. My doctor said I should work out. I told her I like that stare thing. That’s when you find a place to sit down, see someone working out on equipment — and I just stare at them.
We used to go places and walk all over the place, but we are getting too old for all that walking. When Immortal Pirate got cancer, it stopped our enjoyment of going anywhere.
Monetary hobbies: STEM reading and statistics/excel
Fitness: nutrition, running, hiking, lifting, yoga
Creative: I mean most of the art I make these days is just ai generated garbage intended to stop feeling like my oil pastels are worse garbage ripping out a piece of myself I lose, but I do put some thought into rendering well wrought words in comments that are effective at getting people to think, feel, or change.
Knowledge: I keep up with the news through social media and follow curiosity about STEM and social sciences. I’m kind of thirsting for mental stimulation, which brought me back here.
Evolution: I journal and participate in a support group or two and do therapy, but I feel pretty stagnant for too long, so maybe coming back around these parts might do it.
