What is the criteria that must be met for a deep conversation? With whom in your life do you have deep conversations? And how often do you have them? Are they necessary for a rich life?
Not really. Since SoulPancake closed the chat forum, I don’t get into deep conversations. I tried to have the SoulPancake questions with neighbors and friends, but nothing could cut off a conversation faster than a SoulPancake question. The friend would give me a look like I was out of my mind —– and then suddenly they were late for something and had to go.
Sometimes Immortal Pirate and I will get to talking and he gets on a talk-spree and tells me everything I never wanted to know about the subject. I find myself in quiet listening mode. Once I am in listening mode, it ceases to be a two-way conversation. It is more like a Ted Talk and I have gone quiet. Then, there are times that I relate something and he will listen —– then tell me the end of the story to shut me up.
My cousin’s husband has the misconception that women talk to each other just to prattle on for two or three hours of non-stop talk. If I get into a conversation with him, he will tell me the history of oil, or how many uses there are for concrete and cement. Long after I have gotten quiet, which was two sentences into his “talk”, he will continue for two hours. His wife (my cousin) is the same. She will start a long string of family gossip and will go on and on for two or three hours. Nothing makes me turn off of a conversation faster than family gossip. I go quiet. I will not add to the gossip. I will simply listen and let it go. I am not interested in hearing gossip. I am quiet and it is a one way conversation.
So, the answer is — not really. I spend my days being quiet and mostly alone.
@ladybarbara I miss Kilroy from soul pancake and basil nova. Of course, I will always miss @spitfire3dc. I talk to shomama on email a couple times a week. Do you keep in touch with anyone?
@Scarlett2 I have shomama on my list of facebook friends as Wanda Willsteed, and you are on my list of friends as Socra Tess. The list of others is long —- Rufus Ratus, Gomer Kierkegard, Mark kuykendall (Zamfir), Cathy Sheeter, Eric Mazzoni, Eve Slodzina, Beth Bolinger, Michele Beck, Michelle Ackerman, Johnny Questionable, Mel LaVine, Laura Kaye, Christopher Kanas, Lee Rolfson, Kayla Cook, Rosie Shores, Jenn Prine, Rachel Sacco, Boo Lewis, Chooby Ramirez, Sarah Wheatly (Wheatabix), Squirrel, Randy Hajovsky, Lucy Translated, Brian Altano, Gala Gauthier, Jena Axelrod, Novelist, and Drew Fridley. I keep up with their opinions and we trade mimis and quotes, but no real conversations. It is just facebook stuff. I miss Spitfire3d and Grizz.

Two or more scuba divers speaking in sign language about the great white shark that is following them…
The Captain of the submarine conversing with his navigation officer about course setting and depth.
Is that deep enough for a conversation?
I’m not sure what counts as it anymore. I do know that I don’t ever have them though. I just keep anything I ever have in my mind. I probably could talk to a friend or two about some things, but I just don’t really care enough to go down that road. It’s easier and better on sites like this since the relationship of the users is based around deep thoughts and conversations.
@yin makes sense! Me, I thirst for deep conversations at times. I have noticed that I don’t seem to seek it out as much when I am taking my classes,(I think it is because my poor brain is overextended), and am looking forward to the days when those are over. Luckily, I do have a few people outside of the internet who I can go to and have a deep conversation. right now I am working through a thought experiment book. Do you ever read stuff like that? This one is pretty cool. It is called “the pig that wants to be eaten.” and it has a lot of philosophical questions in it, but they are all wrapped around rele interesting hypothetical stories!
@Scarlett2 I don’t usually tend to read much because of my comprehension issues. They frustrate and exhaust me. Things like this site are fine since the posts are usually small. They usually only take a few times of reading through to understand everything, lol. That type of book sounds interesting though if they separate things or make the questions a bit bite sized. Is that a book that does things like one person on one track or three on another and if you’d flip the switch? Or like if you have a ship and you replace parts on it, does it eventually become a different ship or is it the same ship? Hell, I mean, I’d be the type to read a ton of superhero comics, but I just struggle with reading so much, along with the general cost of course, to just do it. Like, these posts of yours I read and responded to in this sitting took me like two hours I think. Maybe a little less, but it is a lot more time than it should have taken due to having to reread not only what you said but what I have said as well to make sure everything makes sense.
