What do you do when you think/ know you’re being taken advantage of?

How do you stop it?

  2. Pause. Acknowledge that your body is giving you a lot of icky feelings specifically as a way to take care of you, making sure you take action. Go for a walk, reach a place with a scenic view and stare out for an hour. Gather your thoughts. Discuss the situation with someone you trust to see their perspective.

Then, once you have all the data, you make a choice. You can try to sever ties with that person (at least temporarily). Don’t initiate contact. If they initiate contact, feel free to say, “sorry, but no. Gotta go.” Accept that you may have permanently lost some things, but at least now you know better and it won’t happen again.

Any specific scenario you had in mind?

  3. I’d take a break for some distance for perspective. Sometimes we think we’re being wronged when it’s just that our preconceived notions aren’t being filled in like we expected.

Once you’ve confirmed a wrong, greater distance is usually the best solution.

    Get outta there……..

A great excuse to avoid somebody: tell them quickly you’re late & have to go, & split like your house is on fire.

I get busy with a life of my own, too busy to do what they are asking of me.

OR, I hold perfectly still and they go find someone else to take advantage of.

My partner in ownership of this house, my beloved partner in life, has been known to suddenly need to go to the Smoke Shop and WalMart shopping, just as I begin to clean up our front yard. I am blowing tree slash off of our rocks in the front yard, blowing them into the driveway. Then I sweep it all into piles and pick it up with a shovel and dustpan to put in leaf bags. He shows up with Root beer, just as I am in the middle of picking it up to put in leaf bags. He helps me finish up the job, but I had to do most of the work (while he went shopping.) He is cleaver like that and most times I ignore it because he does big jobs, like building a green house, or building our new bed.

A few days ago, our next door neighbor wanted me to take care of her little dog and newborn puppies. The dog and puppies spent the night with me and a puppy died in the morning. I watched as the puppy had a seizure before it’s death. Our neighbor did not leave her phone number, so I could not call her. I explained that one of our cats is a predator and sees her little dog as something to beat up. So, I had to protect her dog from the big cat. When I returned her dog, I apologized about the dead puppy. She turned to her daughter and LIED TO HER saying that my cat killed the puppy. I corrected that story on the spot. There was no reason to lie. She was leaving town for a week and wanted me to take care of her SEVERAL dogs while she was gone. I said that I would, but I needed to know her phone number and WHEN she would be leaving and returning. She would have to leave me a house key. She did not say when she was going to leave — or return. She did not give me a key or instructions. Instead. she called me a minute before she was leaving. I fumbled with my phone in my sleep and missed her call. I tried several times to call her back, but her phone was busy. She was calling someone else to take care of her dogs. ——- I went back to sleep and did not let it bother me. —— Not my circus and not my monkeys.
Besides, I did not want to do a favor of dog watching for someone who will not even give me a phone number to call, if something happens. It was best for me to stay quiet and still and she found someone else.

  5. I handle the situation with gentle persuasion employing means that are clearly defined and clearly understood by whomever is attempting to take advantage of me…
