mark twain said that his turning point was getting the measles as a twelve year old boy. He recounts having gotten the measles on purpose, and that his mother sent him away for the fiendish deed. Had he not been sent away, he would have never had worked for the printing press. had he not done that, he would not have become a riverboat pilot. Had he not become a riverboat pilot, he would not have ended up in New Orleans with no money and become a writer.
My turning point may have been falling in love with the wrong man. Had I not fallen in love with the wrong man at the worst possible time. Had I not fallen in love with the wrong man at the worst time, I would not have gone to therapy. Had I not gone to therapy, I would not have moved to a new city. had I not moved to a new city, I would not have gotten a promotion. Had I not gotten a promotion, I would not have gone to grad school and so on and so on…

My turning point was the moment I was carrying my cat outside for him to go potty …. and suddenly a meat cleaver was thrown at me. It would have planted the blade in my chest, but I was carrying a cat. The cat was cut in two!!! Now, I was holding half of a cat and that half had it’s teeth deep in my thumb. Grabbing my (at-the-ready) purse by the door, I ran out to my car. I got it started as my husband jumped in front of it and told me he was not going to let me go!!! I drove forward and he jumped aside. I drove OVER his feet, not caring if I killed him. I drove to the Police Station. I was covered in cat blood and still holding the half of the cat that had a strong bite on my thumb. I pressed charges against my husband. I had him jailed.
While he was in jail, I had my turning point.
I went to a shelter for battered women. I got some good counseling and therapy.
I got a nice apartment and took good care of myself for a year. I got a divorce.
Then, realizing that I owned a house of my own —— that I had been renting to my brother’s brother-in-law (Lowell Henry) for the last 14 years, I gathered myself together and insisted that I was moving back to my house. No more living in my husband’s house and pretending that the house I owned was not important to me.
If I did not move back to my house, I would not have married Lowell Henry. If I had not married Lowell Henry, he would have gotten sick alone and died alone in my house. But, I moved in and married him. I took care of him. When he died, I had taken over paying the bills and handling life so well that going on with life was easy. I was a stronger woman.
Because I was a strong woman, I was able to meet Immortal Pirate and buy into his house — paying it off with him, so that he could retire with me. Because we both owned this house together, it just naturally followed that I would sell my California house and move in with my Pirate to enjoy our retirement and Senior years.
I still have that meat cleaver. It is in a drawer in our kitchen. It is the meat cleaver that turned my life around.
@ladybarbara Uh oh, Is immortal pirate afraid of the meat cleaver? I love a story with a happy ending.
@Scarlett2 No, he has no fears of cutlery. I think that when he sees that meat cleaver his only thought is that I not hack up the good cutting boards. So far, I have not seen Immortal Pirate fear anything — except yard work. Hahahahaha! But, he does help with the work and I appreciate the help.
@ladybarbara
MEAT CLEAVER THROWN AT YOUR CHEST AND IT CUT A CAT IN HALF BUT DIDNT HIT YOU?
THIS STORY HAS BEEN TOLD NUMEROUS TIMES AND EACH TIME GETS BIGGER AND BETTER.
@ladybarbara THEN YOU KEPT CARRYING AROUND HALF A CAT? CANT WAIT UNTIL YOU RETELL THIS AGAIN WITH MORE AND MORE DRAMA
EVERY LIFE HAS BILLIONS OF TURNING POINTS.
