What’s one lie you’re glad you told?

Soul Pancake Page 104

A study by the University of Massachusetts found that 60% of people lie at least once during a ten minute conversation. Women lie most often to make others feel better, while men lie to make themselves feel better.

That would have to be the lie that didn’t have any negative consequences.

Currently searching memory files for that occurrence.

    Please stand by. . .

Sometimes, when I am relating a story, I can possibly embellish it. When I get away with it; I can get a laugh, which might be the real objective. The problem is, that after awhile I come to believe that it really is part of the story.

I’m careful not to embellish in front of my wife. She never lets me get away with it.

That’s what Huck Finn called a few “stretchers”, and said no story was any good without ,em!

I suppose I’ve done that a few times! And for the same purpose of humorous effect.

But like you said tell the same lie too many times and you start to believe it yourself.

@spitfire3dc my “friend” embellishes stories, and definitely doesn’t like when i call him on the truth of the matter.

Oh yeah, I have been known to exaggerate to bring more color to a story, but the main facts remain. To some people, I keep the story streamlined and leave out so much that it leaves the other person to imagine the rest.

example : It used to be that I kept the words that I said to Immortal Pirate’s son to a bare minimum. It was at a time that Immortal Pirate had built some authentic looking cannons and was making the cannon ball stacks to go with the cannons. Immortal Pirate’s son walked in the house and asked me where his Dad was. “He is in the garage painting his balls black.” Thinking that everything going on in our house — between his Dad and I is of some sexual nature, his son was hesitant to enter the garage. But enter he did, only to find his Dad painting wooden cannon balls with black paint.

Usually the lie is in what I leave out and don’t say. The lie is that I don’t know. Actually, I do know and do have an opinion — but I choose to say that I don’t know just to opt out of the conversation and walk away. I often use this when my favorite cousin wants to dish dirt and backbiting gossip about people. She has her hour long dissertation about all the negative worst that she has saved up in a rant. I don’t want to participate in it —- so my lie is , “Well, I don’t know about any of that.” Truth is that I do know, but I don’t want to bad-mouth about another person behind their back. I would like to leave well enough alone. So I set down the phone to make myself something to eat and enjoy my coffee while my cousin rants on non-stop, filling the air with negative hate that I am not listening to. I pick up the phone again when she is finished.

  5. When I was still working as a correctional officer, we had an inmate that was on a hunger strike. He was temporarily housed in an isolation cell for the duration of the strike. Every day that I was assigned to stand watch on this inmate I would relay to him how my grandmother used to make fried Lima beans with bacon and corn bread. It was psychological tactic that worked to get the inmate to break his hunger strike, which only lasted two days.
About a year later, the inmate had earned the privilege of food visits, that’s when family members of the inmates are allowed to bring in home made food for their incarcerated loved ones. The inmate in this particular case requested that his mother bring him fried Lima beans, with corn bread and bacon. I never revealed to him that I have never really had fried Lima beans with cornbread and bacon. I was just trying to get him to break his hunger strike.

“see you tonight”- the lie I told my first husband when he thought I would come home again, like clockwork, like I did every time he got arrested, every time he stayed gone all night, every time he came home drunk, everytime he threatened me, after the fire, even after the threats and events with my kids. finally, that morning when I said the words as if again nothing had happened, I knew it was a lie. maybe he did, too.

I lie to myself sometimes. I guess I am glad I go along with the lie of existence. what else is there to do? play along, I guess.

I suppose I lie of omission the most, like when I keep secret about how much money I spend on vintage dresses.
