Recently the new plan to replace Obamacare was revealed and the anticipated changes may not be what many had expected. I wonder if this has caused supporters to change their position.

I used to love a good steak. Never thought it would drop off the top of my list, but I’d take a grilled salmon over beef any day and then there’s pasta…used to love red, meaty sauces, now gimme a fettuccine with scallops, shrimp and clams washed down with a compatible white wine and its all good.
Great! Now I’m hungry and I don’t have salmon or pasta on the menu for tonight.
Unless I am forgetting something, the last thing was quite a while ago. Years ago, I was for the death penalty and thought drugs should be/stay illegal. Not sure which changed first. Learning about the cost of the death penalty and the innocent people dying from it changed me. Learning how some drugs aren’t that bad, are used to consistently put people in prison for long periods of time, and them being legal (or at least decriminalized) could lead to people getting help when they need it without the fear of being arrested changed me.
I still struggle with the death penalty. The fact that new technology brings forth situations that prove innocence is a big deal. But with criminals of especially heinous crimes…I have a hard time with that. Some are so bad that I think in certain cases death is deserved. I dunno.
The war on drugs went out of control. In most cases, I think that it should be decriminalized too. The offenses carry such ridiculously heavy penalties.
I understand the feeling of wanting it for the worst crimes, I do, I just can’t follow it anymore myself. I’ve heard people say that it should only be used when we know that the person did the crime for a fact. Problem with that is, why are the others in prison if we don’t know? Kind of defeats the purpose. I used to want it around as well for those that are so terrible that we could not risk them getting out. I now feel that we need better security for prisons than we need the penalty. If the person wants to die, I think we should go about giving it to them since I am also for assisted suicide for those that wish. Overall, I just don’t see it as a true justice system with it. It’d be more of a revenge system in my opinion. I get how people want it at times though.
Regarding the death penalty.
What if it was more “for” the society than “against” the trespasser?
Society is really just a large living organism with many parts. Some pathogenic processes can be cured or corrected. Others we can mitigate the effects of.
But sometimes utter eradication of the toxic element is the best option for the health of the greater whole. Keeping it around just drags the whole organism down.
We get hung up on the “punishment”, “retribution” or “deterrent” aspect of it.
Or the “”niceness”” factor of not doing it.
But what if it was simply keeping the organism healthy?
Just after New Years this year. Immortal Pirate said the words I longed to hear, that he needed me in his life. He clearly wanted us to live together. I weighed it carefully and talked to a few real estate agents about how to sell when I had a reverse mortgage. It is very hard to get out from under a reverse mortgage.
Then, a real estate agent called me and said he had a buyer that would immediately pay off the reverse mortgage and buy the house. I will leave out the part where the buyer abused me emotionally. In short order, the real estate agent and buyer were at my table setting the deal. As soon as I said yes, they let a Notary in my house and the Notary had ALL OF THE PAPERWORK already filled out for me to sign, sign, sign. Once it was signed and taken to their office, the real estate agent and buyer were back to call the bank and mortgage company to pay off the mortgage, then transfer funds to my bank — paying me for the sale. It was finished in 2 days and escrow was closed.
Escrow closing just 2 days after I agreed to sell was a whirlwind deal. I have never known escrow to take only 2 days.
One week, I thought it would be impossible to sell my house and move, and within days I was calling Immortal Pirate to tell him that I sold my house and just needed to pack and call a moving company.
That switch was so fast that it made me dizzy. From then, it was a mad rush to pack and get all my furniture and 72 boxes moved to Arizona.
I totally changed my career and lifestyle 5 years ago to become an over-the-road trucker. I laugh at idioms about old dogs and new tricks! I found change rejuvenating.
But changing how you live is child’s play compared to changing how you think.
I have recently changed how I think about our society’s inexorable march towards victimhood. We all rush to count ourselves as victims of something.
Of others; of ourselves; of our past; of our conditions; of the system; of our gender; of our feelings thoughts and urges; of the left; of the right; of fate; of God.
if we could just change this victimhood thinking, we would resolve many things that have been plaguing our species for a very long time in one fell swoop.
Are we ready for this switch? Meh! Give us a few thousand years to muck things up even worse and we might consider it!
Hey mama joy…I finally switched from the Wall Street Journal to the New York Times. I was a subscriber to the WSJ from 2004 to 2016. But in 2016 I switched to the NYT. It is a great read.
