Human nature finds fences easier to build. They define a space we claim as under our control. One person can easily build a fence; and the traditional message of a fence, is “keep out!”.
Bridges are harder to build, particularly if they are to be a thing of consequence. Knocking down a tree over a ravine is a 1-person job; but larger ones benefit from having someone working from each shore.
They are not about control and isolation; but about connecting. They say, “Come on over!”.
I find fences easier to build. But I much prefer to build bridges. “Easier” doesn’t always mean “best”.
Not only can I move off my island of self and explore the world; others can come into my world as part of their exploring the world!
@griz im trying hard to keep lines open as it were, to build bridges. i find i put up fences without realizing it. and then i am facing a fence that is partly of my own doing, and wondering if i want to climb it, sit on it, grow cucumbers up it or just walk away from it (and those on the other side.) bridges keep people in, but im timid about these bridges. i dotn want to lose the people in my life now, so i know bridges are the better choice. yep, im keeping the lines open

Bridges? Bridges are also easy, if I care to build one. The other night, we were at a city party on “Pirate” night. We were dressed as pirates and walking the street fair. A retarded woman, dressed like a pirate, wanted to walk with us, because she was nervous when people touched her to say they liked her clothing. I saw that she was mentally retarded and had a big case of Asburgers. Immortal Pirate thought that she was a boy —- an annoying boy. For her, I built a bridge because she was not comfortable with the crowds of people —– who were also dressed like pirates. When Immortal Pirate stopped to buy us some bottled water, I had him buy this woman a bottled water, too. So, she was our companion for the street walk. It was because I built the bridge to befriend her.

@BelleMadre I think some fences are important. I’ve torn down a few, only to realize they should have forever remained in place.
@Jear77 this is fair and true too. sometimes we put them there for our own safety, or as a defense mechanism, and its ok to remember that…
Draw bridges with a wall at either end and a trap door in the middle to dispose of unwanted guests/visitors…(evil lol).

i find it harder to but im trying to build bridges and less fences
It’s even easier to burn them down.
I think they’re equally easy if you believe you have a good reason.
