I own only 6 trees. An orange tree grown from the seed of an orange picked in the small yard of the House of the Bab, in Shiraze, Iran, just as the government soldiers were bulldozing the gardens and house. They paved over the place where the House of the Bab once stood. In their efforts to destroy the Baha’i Faith in Iran. Some seeds were saved and the orange trees from those seeds grow on Mount Carmel, Israel. My tree has been growing since I planted my stolen seed in 1984. The poor little orange tree has been moved every time I move and it hardly gets it’s roots settled — and I move again. This time that I tore it out of the ground, I put it in a pot to move to Arizona. So traumatizing was that move, that the tree seemed to die. Then …. life from a twig. The little tree is coming back. The oranges of this tree are small and bitter, but they add a flavor to a pot of Persian tea that no other orange can. I hope to stay here and grow the tree in our yard. I stole the seed that made this tree and hid the seed in my underwear on the trip back to the United States. Other friends took the other seeds from the one orange left after the Bab’s tree was taken down. So, I know that my tree has siblings growing in California. One in Rancho Bernardo, CA, another in San Marcos, CA. I dearly love my little orange tree. I hope to nurture it into the 8 ft. tall tree it’s parent once was. Yes, I own that tree.
Then there is the avocado tree that we grew from an avocado given to me by my cousin Sue. She grew her avocado tree from a seed of an avocado grown in my Grandma’s yard. Immortal Pirate and I planted this tree and it is happily growing here in the greenhouse and ready for a sheltered place in the yard.
I bought a lemon tree, a fig tree, and a plum tree from Home Depot. I own them. I have receipts.
Then there is a mesquite tree in the front yard. It is the tallest in the neighborhood. It drops tiny leaves and branch bits, but worst of all. it drops pods. What a mess!!! However, Immortal Pirate makes pipes from the mesquite wood and sells them at the local Smoke Shop. The mesquite wood also makes beautiful fret boards (finger boards) on the guitars that Immortal Pirate makes and sells. We own that mighty tree.
We own 6 trees and although one could say that only nature owns a tree, well, I don’t see Mother nature out here pruning and watering.
I don’t think we own trees, and trees don’t own us. I believe we all live in harmony. As I have said here before, I am a Park Steward at a local park. I estimate I have helped plant 700 or so trees in my life. At my first park event, I carefully took off the ivy and morning glory that had woven itself onto each branch of a tiny pine tree. It was choking the life out of it. Each event I would remove more invasives that tried to take this little tree down. 8 years later, this tree is about 10 feet tall; it’s a little crooked due to the how it began it’s life, but it’s a survivor. I feel personally responsible for this forest, and my “little” tree.
